Spendthrift Farm stallion Tiz Wonderful sired the first winner from his debut crop, when two-year-old filly Scammony earned an impressive debut victory in a $57,000 maiden special weight Thursday afternoon at Churchill Downs.
In a field full of well-meant debutantes, Scammony broke sharply and flashed good early speed while stalking the early pacesetters. The attractive bay filly ranged up to the leaders in the stretch before powering on by and proving best by a length on the wire. She finished five furlongs in 59.31 over a fast main track.
Scammony took plenty of betting action in the 10-horse field, going off as the third choice for trainer Tom Amoss and owner Gold Mark Farm LLC. Gold Mark purchased the filly for $85,000 as a yearling at last year’s Keeneland September Sale. Scammony, who was bred in Kentucky by Tim Hamlin from the Pembroke mare Scammer, earned $34,380 for her connections Thursday.
Tiz Wonderful, by leading sire Tiznow, was an undefeated two-year-old, including winning the Kentucky Jockey Club S. (G2) and Iroquois S. (G3) at Churchill Downs. Like Scammony, Tiz Wonderful was impressive at first asking, breaking his maiden by 12 ½ lengths at Saratoga for Stonestreet Stable. He wrapped up his juvenile campaign weighted 120 lbs on the Experimental Free Handicap, and was one of the winter-book favorites for the Kentucky Derby.
Tiz Wonderful stands at B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm in Lexington for a fee of $12,500, stands and nurses. His first crop runners have been well-received in the sales ring, including a pair of colts that sold for $525,000 and $310,000, respectively, at the two-year-olds in training sales earlier this year.
