Louisiana Derby winner Gun Runner came out of the race well, and his trainer, Steve Asmussen, indicated the colt will head straight to the Kentucky Derby.
The Daily Racing Form reports that Mo Tom, who once again experienced a troubled trip, will also make his next start at Churchill Downs.
Asmussen told the Form that Gun Runner was shipping to Churchill Downs on Monday, and would train there leading up to the Derby.
Trainer Tom Amoss indicated that Mo Tom would ship to Churchill on Tuesday, and would also be trained up to the race. The colt currently has accumulated 32 points toward the Derby.
Amoss said that he had discussed both running Mo Tom again and a possible rider change for the colt with Greg Bensel, who manages the racing interests of the Benson family.
“We have no interest in running in another race,” Amoss said. “We’re going to stand pat.”
Amoss was furious with jockey Corey Lanerie’s ride aboard Mo Tom on Saturday, but said that a decision regarding a rider change would wait for the time being.
“We discussed a rider change, but we’re not going to think like that now,” Amoss added. “Look, Corey is a very good rider. We have cooler heads today. If there’s a decision to be made, we’re not making it now.”
