Opelousas, LA – Sept. 8, 2011 – Culotte ($3.00), patiently ridden by veteran Gerard Melancon, grabbed the lead from early pacesetter Coteau Kitten in the upper stretch, then pulled clear from that rival under moderate urging to record a popular three-length victory in the $50,000 Opelousas Stakes for two-year-old fillies at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino on Thursday evening.
The running time for the six furlongs on a track labeled fast was 1:11.37
Coteau Kitten, who led while setting fractions of 22.54 & 46.17 for the opening quarter and half-mile, held on for the runner-up spot, a neck in front of third place finisher Mais Oui. Burnt Star was next in fourth, and Hydingindyinosidy trailed throughout in the five horse field.
A $50,000 yearling purchase last September, Culotte earned $30,000 for the win, her second consecutive in a stakes event and third overall from four career starts. Owned by Theodore Bulmahn’s Gold Mark Farm LLC and trained by Tom Amoss, the Kentucky bred daughter of Sky Mesa has now earned more than $112,250.
The 2011 spring/summer thoroughbred season wraps up with a pair of eleven race programs on Friday, September 9 and Saturday, September 10 with Simulcast wagering continuing daily.
