LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) — If he runs to his looks Mylute is going to be a serious challenger on Derby Day.
The dark-gray colt strikes a stunning profile on the backside but trainer Tom Amoss says he is one cool dude.
During a visit to Barn 29, I got acquainted with Mylute, who loves attention and peppermints. Nothing seems to bother the colt and Amoss thinks his horse won’t mind the big crowds on Derby Day.
Mylute is coming off a second place finish in the Louisiana Derby, and finished just ahead of Departing who went on to win the Illinois Derby.
Amoss says Mylute has a real chance in the Kentucky Derby despite the fact that his sire, Midnight Lute, was primarily known as a champion sprinter.
Amoss followed Midnight Lute’s Breeders Cup wins as part of the TVG broadcasting team and he says the sprinter was bred as a route horse but was kept to sprinting because of a throat problem.
He was fast enough to win the Breeders’ Cup Sprint twice. But his sire was Derby winner Real Quiet. Amoss says several of Midnight Lute’s offspring have already shown the ability to route.
Mylute ran a strong mile and an eighth in the Louisiana Derby and passed the eventual winner in the stretch; but Revolutionary came back to win the race by a neck.
The two will meet again on Saturday, and Amoss thinks that Revolutionary will be one of the top three favorites in the Derby. He figures if Revolutionary can improve, why not his horse.
In the meantime at Barn 29, when it comes to peppermints, Mylute can quote another Derby horse, “I’ll Have Another.”
