Derby contender Mylute is one cool customer

If he runs to his looks Mylute is going to be a serious challenger on Derby Day. The dark-gray colt strikes a stunning profile on the backside but trainer Tom Amoss says he is one cool dude. During a visit to Barn 29, I got acquainted with Mylute, who loves attention and peppermints.

Trainer Tom Amoss said he only wanted a maintanance work from Louisiana Derby (gr. II) runner-up Mylute April 27 at Churchill Downs, and that was exactly what jockey Rosie Napravnik delivered in preparation for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

Napravnik to ride Mylute in Kentucky Derby

Jockey Rosie Napravnik has accepted the Kentucky Derby mount on Louisiana Derby runner-up Mylute. Napravnik, the leading rider at Fair Grounds the past three meetings, rode Mylute to his last win, a 10 3/4-length romp over optional claiming rivals at Fair Grounds on December 26.

Rosie Napravnik will ride Louisiana Derby runner-up Mylute in the Kentucky Derby, it was announced this morning. Napravnik rode the Tom Amoss-trained Mylute in the colt’s 10 3/4-length victory in an allowance race at the Fair Grounds.

NEW ORLEANS — Revolutionary is ready to take a run at the Kentucky Derby, jockey Javier Castellano said Saturday after the colt won the $1 million, Grade 2 Louisiana Derby by a neck at the Fair Grounds. There’s no longer a question of qualifying for the Kentucky Derby field.

Mylute is a bit of a conundrum for trainer Tom Amoss. The colt’s pedigree says sprinter, but his build says he’s a stayer. Sometimes his morning workouts look fine. Others are a head scratcher, such as the 51.00 four-furlong breeze he put in Friday.
