GoldMark Farm’s Backtalk, a multiple graded stakes-winning son of Smarty Jones, has been retired from racing and will stand the upcoming breeding season at Tom Simon’s Vinery Florida near Summerfield, Fla. His fee is $3,500.
“Backtalk possessed a determined acceleration which made him a thrilling competitor on the track, and we are honored to stand him at such a quality farm as Vinery,” said T. Paul Bulmahn, owner of GoldMark Farm.
“We look forward to seeing him pass on his imposing conformation and precocious abilities to his offspring.” said Todd Quast, GoldMark’s general manager.
Backtalk was a leading 2-year-old through the summer of 2009. A debut winner at Churchill Downs, Backtalk next won the Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill and the Sanford Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga.
At 3, Backtalk took the Sportsman’s Paradise Stakes in his first start that year and later placed in four stakes including the Illinois Derby (gr. III). He also was stakes-placed this year. During his career he won or placed in 11 of 15 starts and earned $405,051.
Bred in Florida by Clover Leaf Farms II, Backtalk is out of the stakes-winning Affirmed mare Apasionata Sonata and is a half brother to multiple grade II winner Bsharpsonata.
